Aesthetics and Politics of the Commons

In the early 19th century, aesthetics evolved from being the study of sensibility to become, through Hegel and other renowned villains, art theory. This implied, among other things, that all relational and generative potential exceeding a merely reproductive life was now framed under what “high culture” recognized as art. The rest, in the best case, would become folklore or it would just not exist at all. Obviously, the potential of aesthetics as an anthropological and political project was tremendously limited as the commons in aesthetics, languages of generative patters through which one can share the keys to production, aesthetic reception and the auto-organization of the possible relational modes were “enclosed”.

This enclosing, as the one described by Marx in relation to the fields of labor, transformed the field of the aesthetic commons –sensible in pleasant meadows in which artists, critics and curators of modernity could graze. Following the process described by Marx, these meadows would later become hunting estates where the very wealthy would go to fetch for pieces to hang in their living room over the chimney, as it still happens in current art fairs and biennials.

In our research, we value investigation, which has been lost in the process of enclosure. Our hypothesis gears towards highlighting the reportorial and dispositional elements, which would compose a “laboratorium” of the commons. This would be a laboratory for the aesthetic behaviors that can be understood in all its modal potential as proposals for the organization of perception and life.

Group dynamics:

This is an outline that can be modified and extended. The idea is to have interested people participate by either including new elements to this basic program or by working around the existing elements in order to make this experience more fertile and fun.

The constituted group is committed to procure the complete text from the lecture to all those interested in the research group fifteen days before each intervention for an evaluation and discussion.

To participate in the group´s discussions and to be on the loop about meetings, subscribe to this mailing list.
