Low cost physical computing

Desde 16/11/2006 07:11 hasta 16/11/2006 12:11

In this three-part presentation, attendees will gain exposure to a number of inexpensive, efficient, and durable physical computing processes and techniques. A variety of accessible sensor systems as well as high power voltage extensions will also be introduced that can be  used in the research, quick fabrication, and rapid prototyping of autonomous a.i. systems as well as in the development of interactive performative and telekinetic experiences.

In the presentation I will first share some of my own work with installations that investigate the phenomenon of human interaction through interfaces. Next, I will give a hands-on demonstration using microcontrollers, sensors, found objects, and hacked systems that I use to create these environments and interfaces. Last, attendees will work collaboratively in small groups, to prototype a collective interactive symphony using the materials introduced in the presentation.

Artist Statement

Everything in our world can be thought of as an interface influencing the way we see and understand our own identity within the context of public/social space. Physical interfaces, symbols, signs, spaces, noises, and any other forms of stimuli that we either inhabit, are exposed to, or use can affect how we interact and communicate with others.

Example: SpinFlick investigates the relationship between the initial gesture, or the "Spin" of a coin, and the byproduct "Flick" slang for "Movie" which refers to the narrative effects caused by the initial gesture. The viewer functions both as activator and spectator in this gesture dialog.
