The Approach

The communal woodlands are Gallegan institutions that have been in existence since immemorial times. There are approximately 3000 productive community units that cover an area of 700.000 hectares:

"The communally managed woodlands are one of the few communal territorial properties that have survived the municipal organization of the 19th century and the phenomenon of ecclesial confiscations" and in the Article 2 of the Law 13/1989 "The woodlands managed communally are indivisible goods that cannot be proscribed, seized or transferred".

The project is funded by Medialab-Prado, through the different work groups that conform the Commons Lab; however, each participant must cover his o her own trip and accommodation. If you are interested please fill out the following form.

 

Provisional Program


22.06.2012:
14:00h: Departure from Madrid
22:00h: Arrival at the Rural Lodging, dinner and first meeting. Accommodation.

23.06.2012:
10:00h: After breakfast, visit to the Communal Woodland of San Antón, observation of the current situation of the woodland and its management in communal life.
12:00h: Debate: Is it possible to create new proposals in rural environments beyond rural tourism?
14:00h: Lunch.
17:00h: Recovering the memory of what is common. Debate: on the changes in communal life with the inhabitants of Mántaras, or how times change.
18:30h: Screening of La mujer y la comunidad rural (Women and Rural Community) filmed in 1969 in Paderno (Vigo), a municipality near Mántaras. The video can also be seen here
21:30h: Dinner and accommodation.

Those who wish to do so may go to the San Juan Fair (with their traditional fires).

24.06.2012:
10:00h: After breakfast, meeting with Lidia Serna.
11:00h: Go to bergondo (Vixoi). Visit explotación agroecológica with Javier Seijo.
13:30h: Departure to Madrid 
22:00h: Arrival to Madrid.
