WikiST. New forms of citizen production of STandards

Desde 18/12/2007 12:12 hasta 19/12/2007 12:12

Our societies’ culture is based on the production of standards (What does it mean to "eat right"? Or how much radiation exposure is safe?), established by experts. With new technologies, including wikis, citizens have begun to take part in producing this knowledge, once the sole province of experts. WikiST is a discussion forum about the emerging tensions in this new scenario.

SESSIONS

Enrolling citizens, students, neighbours…

Wednesady, December 19th, 12.00-14.00

Wikis can be found in public administration, at school, at universities, among neighbours, incorporated into traditional institutions: What kind ofl transformation takes place in these organizations after being structured through a wiki device? What kind of new spaces and what new social practices are created? In what sense can one speak of changes and what assessment can we make of the interaction among the so-called “social media” and everyday life?

New Spaces for Diversity?

Wednesday, December 19th, 16.00-18.00

Wikipedia has become the ensign of a new citizens’ form of knowledge production. However, Wikipedia is also undergoing a profound process of questioning and transformation. Can one speak of new standards in the production of knowledge by citizens? And does wiki technology make it possible for citizens to participate in creating spaces for co-existence that are better organized and more just? Are technology and fairness related?

- Antonio Lafuente, CSIC (http://weblogs.madrimasd.org/tecnocidanos)
- Juan Freire, Universidade da Coruña (http://nomada.blogs.com/)

Wikis for knowledge production

Wednesday, December 19th, 18.30-20.30

What implications does the practice of wikis have, as well as the resulting opening-up of scientific and legal endeavours /procedures that have never before been carried out in the public eye?
