The Delocalized Laboratory

By Xabier Erkizia

The digital hangover leaves a mark. Sound work creation and distribution systems lead us to question the traditional, historically problematic, system designed and used for decades to carry out those tasks. New structures, methods, techniques and forms arise, offering infinite possibilities for sound creation. Editing is a process comprising various links (fragmentations, adaptations, quotes, reinterpretations, plagiarism, versions…), which are understood as productive interruptions given that, although they ensure transmission to a certain extent, they inevitably alter what is transmitted. In the sound context, editing takes the form of a work methodology enabling one to use any kind of audio material. The aim will be to look for effective strategies and tools in the resignification of sound resources based on a problem-solving theoretical-practical reflection on the concept of editing.

7:30pm

Multi Channel Diffusion and Wind Space Architecture (the illusion of repetition)

By Steve Heimbecker

Artist will present video and audio clips of his work and will speak about his art and sound making processes and concepts, including his unique sound diffusion strategies and production techniques implemented in the broad range of his artistic practice. These techniques will touch on such early concepts as Squaring the Circle, the Soundpool, Acoustic Mapping Process, and Dynamic Voltage Mapping, along with newer diffusion strategies such as Wind Space Architecture and the Illusion of Repetition. Heimbecker will bring focus to the development of his Wind Array Cascade Machine (2003), a 64 channel, field like, digital sensor network he built, that records the cascading wave patterns of the wind, and the history and use of this data within his work since 2003. Steve will complete his talk with his most recent installation and concert system, the powerful and "portable" Turbulence Sound Matrix, a 64 channel, 3,200 watt sound diffusion instrument / system.
