Digital Empiria. Research Seminars about the Internet and Digital Technologies
What is Empiria Digital
The results from researches in various stages (completed, developing and in gestation) are presented and discussed in monthly seminars. This name refers to what is laxly understood as the “digital” space, through which we can understand current aspects of our times. The discussion we aim to open seeks to bring contrast to homogenous discourses on the topic of the Internet and digital technologies, flush out multiple forms of these technologies, explore diverse digital cultures and question the limits of what is “digital”. To some extent, the discussion also plans to go deeper into the methodological challenges brought up in these analyses.
We aim to do this by highlighting empirical work as an informational source, oriented specially to ethnographical research. Even though the Internet and digital technologies is object of great discussion and analysis, this is primarily based in anecdotes or voluntary generalizations drawn before any empirical evidence. In many times, discourses are driven by technology´s potential rather than by accurate realizations. This is why research presented here must be based on empirical work and not only on speculative analysis.
The seminars are planned as an explicit call for social scientists to intervene in many public debates taking place today on the topic of the Internet and its multiple technologies. The selection of Medialab-Prado as the location for the seminars shows a willingness to be part of this dialog and an eagerness to explore the possibilities of hybridization among diverse audiences and ways to exhibit, as well as to inform about learning methods that differ from conventional academic customs.
Seminars take place monthly and are open to researchers, students or anyone interested in sharing their work. The intention is to constitute a stable group for discussion. Those interested can write to jestalellaf(at)uoc.edu
