Finding the equations for behaviour

There are patterns in everything. The question for applied mathematicians like me is how we can capture these patterns in a small number of equations. I will tell you the equations of meteoric success,the equations for fish schooling and insect swarming, the equations for group decision-making, the equations for segregation and the equations of development and democracy.  

But you should ask me what these equations really mean? In answer, I will argue that they allow us to see the patterns in the world just that little bit more more clearly. They also allow us to make art out of our observations. Equations don't offer a definitive truth, but they do offer a greater understanding and beauty.
