rePlay: reCapture and reMix. Permanent Seminar about Audiovisual Remix and Open Memories

How much personal memories is trapped in technological obsolescence, buried in a new generation of devices and formats? What happend to that birthday VHS? That song we recorded with our brothers in an audio tape? The slides of the excursion? The Super 8 film of that snowy day?

The switch from analog to digital medium has not always be an solution for preserving data. The lack of comunication between codecs and technologies prevent the opportunity to retrieve emotions, light impressions, experiences, thoughts, music and voices we keep in boxes with no key.

Playing with José Luis Brea's metaphor, we want to open audivisual codes trapped in ROM memories and put them in circulation with living remixes, with RAM memories.

General goal: To open memories. Recapture documents. Remix of personal and public audiovisual files. Audiovisual hackactivism.

1. Time machine. We will build a rack or physical station in the Medialab where we will connect different players, to rescue from VHS to zip files, from a miniDV to aBeta, and generate an open format in order to continue editing.
2. Identify public files of audiovisual material and reuse them for collective memory.
3. Remix, edit and generate new narratives in open video formats. Ellaborate tutorials about how to capture, transform, convert, remix, etc.
